Strengthening SAIs' Capacity in Climate Change and Sustainable Development Auditing

AFROSAI organized a training session on Climate Change and Sustainable Development Auditing from 20 to 22 July 2026 in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco.

This initiative forms part of AFROSAI's ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of African Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change and sustainable development. It aims to equip auditors with the knowledge and practical tools required to conduct audit engagements in accordance with the International Standards of Supreme Audit Institutions (ISSAIs) and the frameworks related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The session brought together more than 20 auditors representing AFROSAI member SAIs. The training was conducted in both French and English, with simultaneous interpretation to facilitate active participation and productive exchanges among attendees.

The training was delivered by recognized experts in environmental auditing, including two auditors from the National Audit Office of Tanzania (NAOT). Participants also benefited from an experience-sharing session led by the Court of Accounts of the Kingdom of Morocco, highlighting practical approaches and good practices in the field of climate change and sustainable development auditing.

Over the course of the three-day programme, participants explored key concepts, methodologies, and audit tools applicable to climate and environmental issues, drawing on the ISSAIs and internationally recognized frameworks relating to the Sustainable Development Goals. The exchange of experiences among the participating SAIs further enriched the discussions and promoted the sharing of good practices.

As part of the programme, participants also took part in a study visit to a water treatment plant, providing practical insight into sustainable water resource management and illustrating issues that may be subject to environmental audit engagements.

Through this initiative, AFROSAI reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the professional capacities of its member SAIs and fostering African expertise in climate change and sustainable development auditing, thereby supporting SAIs in their contribution to effective, accountable, and sustainable public governance.

At the conclusion of the training session, certificates of participation were awarded to all participants in recognition of their commitment and active participation throughout the programme.
